Christ's College rugby team pose for a team portrait in about 1880. The elite Christchurch school was modelled on the English public school system, where organised sport had been introduced to build strength and character in boys. Most other secondary boys' schools also introduced organised sport, usually rugby in winter and cricket in summer.
