The Maadi Cup was presented in 1947 for competition among secondary school rowers. The regatta at which it is contested became steadily more popular, with girls' schools first entering in 1973. In the 2013 competition, held at Lake Karāpiro, there were 48 events and 570 races involving 120 schools. Here a heat of the girls' under-16 single sculls gets under way on 20 March. The winners of the premier events, the eights, that year were Hamilton Boys' High School and St Margaret's College, Christchurch.
