A New Zealand team played New South Wales in 1904, but New Zealand's first full international football match was this game against Australia at Dunedin's Carisbrook, on 17 June 1922. A crowd of about 10,000 saw the teams draw 2–2. The second test in Wellington was then drawn 1–1, but New Zealand won the third test in Auckland 3–1 to take the series.
