‘Los Angeles’, one of the first Californian-style bungalows in New Zealand, was built in Fendalton, Christchurch, in 1910. It had many design elements that were to become common to the bungalow – low, beamed ceilings, timber-panelled walls and a sense of easy flow from one room to another. The simple, heavy furniture and restrained decoration made a radical change from the typical villa interior.
