As a high-born woman of Te Whānau-ā-Apanui and Ngāti Porou, Mihi Kōtukutuku Stirling was a leader of her people and was allowed to speak on the marae, a right usually reserved for senior men. This brought her into conflict with male elders of other tribes at hui, resulting in some fiery and memorable exchanges.
