Women and men playing croquet, Canterbury, 1860s

Women and men playing croquet, Canterbury, 1860s

Croquet is one of the few traditionally mixed sports. In the 19th century croquet was seen as suitable for women because it was non-contact and slow and could be played in long dresses. Here, women, men, girls and boys are playing croquet on the lawn of a Canterbury house in the 1860s.
