Wave pool, 2005

A lifeguard keeps watch as children try out the new wave pool at Mt Maunganui's Baywave Aquatic Leisure Centre in December 2005. Wave pools use pressurised air, paddles or an 'accordion' mechanism to create waves. In some larger pools it is possible to surf as well as swim.
