This is the rugby team at Whakarewarewa, near Rotorua, in the late 19th century. Rugby was played by Māori from the 1870s, and in some Māori communities, such as Whakarewarewa, clubs were set up. Arthur Warbrick, one of five brothers who played in the 1888–89 Native team, lived for a time at Whakarewarewa and was buried there. Whakarewarewa was still a flourishing rugby club in the 2000s.
