Silver Fern Rally, 2006

Silver Fern Rally, 2006

The New Zealand Silver Fern Rally was first held in 2006 as a week-long, 1,500-kilometre international marathon on South Island gravel roads. The inaugural competition attracted 21 international teams, and many found the local weather and driving conditions extremely challenging. This photo shows the Ford Escort 2000 of Don Rubie and Charlie MacFarquhar of Auckland coming to grief in a water hazard known as 'the car wash'. The 2006 Silver Fern Rally was won by Brian Stokes of Canterbury driving a Ford RS Cosworth.
