Ron Roycroft (in an Austin 7), leads (left to right) Morrie Proctor (in a Riley), Bob Christie (driving an MG) and Hec Green (in a Wolseley Special) in the first New Zealand Championship Road Race (forerunner of the New Zealand Grand Prix). The 50-lap 105-mile (169-kilometre) race, held at Wigram Airfield, Christchurch, in 1949, was won by Proctor at an average speed of 66 miles per hour (106 kilometres per hour). In fifth place was the only woman driver in the race, Sybil Lupp, at the wheel of an MG TC.
