Gladys Watkins

When she learned in the 1920s of the plan to build a national war memorial incorporating a carillon, talented musician Gladys Watkins travelled to Europe to learn how to play the demanding instrument. After the New Zealand National War Memorial Carillon was dedicated in Wellington in 1932 she became the first official carillonist, holding the position until her retirement in 1936.
