A family get the fire going in the thermette during a roadside picnic at Longlands, near Hastings, in 1953. The thermette was a New Zealand invention, a metal water container with a central funnel. The funnel was loaded with flammable material, which was then lit to heat the water. Thermettes were used extensively from the 1930s to the 1960s.
