Auckland’s Karangahape Road was a major entertainment district in the 1990s, when several nightclubs opened. Some of the clubs – including the Staircase and Legend – drew a predominantly gay crowd. By the time this photograph was taken at the Staircase in 2001 or 2002, a more mixed crowd was attending.
