Noted Canterbury horsewoman Bella Button drove the horses she trained in trotting events until she was banned from official competition in 1896. She is pictured with one of her trotters in the 1890s. Button was the most successful of a small number of woman drivers at the time. When the trotting authorities put a stop to her driving, she continued to train both trotters and thoroughbreds, as there was no rule against this. The rule banning women drivers remained in force until 1979.
