This pile of clay pipes was found at Copsey Place, Avondale, Auckland. Perhaps they were dumped, or perhaps they came from a hotel, as the land was once owned by a brewer. It was common practice for hotels to give out clay pipes such as these free to patrons to facilitate relaxed socialising and encourage tobacco purchases. Pipes made of clay were cheap and very common in the 19th century.
