A pipe-smoker's visiting card (2 o 5)

A pipe-smoker's visiting card

Smoking a pipe was a habit of middle-class men as well as working men. This urban gentleman from Auckland in the 1870s was quite happy to show himself portrayed puffing on his pipe. The portrait adorned the visiting card which he would have presented in respectable social situations.
