Long hair, 2008 (5 o 5)

Long hair, 2008

The fashion for long straight hair was revived in the 1990s and 2000s. This 2008 photograph, taken at the opening of an Auckland hair spa, shows two variations of the style. Gemma Wigg (left) wears a pompadour with her back hair loose, while Stef Lust (right) and Stef Winter (centre) have a variation of the ‘Rachel’ (named after a character in popular the US sitcom Friends, it was a layered hairstyle based on the 1980s shag cut). Dyeing and bleaching hair became standard in the 1980s, with the use of 'foils' (individually dying locks of hair by wrapping them in foil) from the 1990s. It is likely that these heads of blond hair have been assisted, as they have the variation in colour that use of foils gives.
