Kōrero: Military and sport

Competitors dive in the final of the 100 yards breaststroke at the Divisional Swimming Championships at Maadi, Egypt, on 29 August 1943. General Bernard Freyberg, a former swimming champion, had early in the war ordered that a swimming pool be constructed at Maadi. Maadi remained a major training and administrative base for New Zealand troops even after the fighting moved from North Africa to Italy in July 1943. Sporting competitions continued until the camp was closed in 1946.
