Many new housing subdivisions in the 2010s had rules that prescribed the size and design of houses. The intention was to prevent housing that was unsympathetic or out of character with others in the community and to protect property values. Individualism was suppressed for perceived community benefit. In the new town of Pegasus, north of Christchurch, home buyers could choose from a range of designs provided by the settlement's developer. These 'courtyard range' designs featured traditional gable and hip roof forms and a range of materials and colours. The use of street-fronting verandahs and terraces as well as the placement of garages at the rear of the house showed a progressive attempt to encourage street life – evocative of 19th-century streets.
