Scientists on the subantarctic islands expedition organised by the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury stop for lunch in Olearia scrub in the northern Auckland Islands in November 1907. There were 23 scientists on the trip, some of whom explored Campbell Island and some the Auckland Islands. The expedition comprised four scientific groups – a magnetic survey, a geology survey, a botany survey and a zoology survey. Leonard Cockayne led the botany group and William Benham the zoology one. Their transport, the government steamer Hinemoa, also discovered and rescued the castaways from the Dundonald.
