This display is from Southland Museum's outstanding gallery on the subantarctic islands, 'Beyond the roaring forties'. The exhibit emphasises that the arrival of human beings on the islands in the first two decades of the 19th century was largely in pursuit of the New Zealand fur seal. The animals' skins were popular for women's hats.
