In the early 2000s there were over 200 pairs of northern giant petrels (Macronectes halli) breeding on Campbell Island. They were known as scavengers who used to feed on the seal and whale carcasses left by hunters. Other petrels on Campbell Island are the grey petrel, subantarctic diving petrel and grey-backed storm petrel, and large numbers of white-chinned petrels (Procellaria aequinoctialis).
