A hide for watching sea lions is held down by strong ropes as a protection against the fierce winds on the Auckland Islands. The winds at this latitude (about 50º south) are predominantly from the west. Since Enderby Island is in the north-west of the Auckland Islands, the gales there are ferocious. The coastal rātā in the background have been severely contorted by the wind.
