Mohammed Ali Amiri, shown here with his father Amir Amiri, was an asylum seeker on the ship the Tampa in 2001. Detained by Australian authorities for three years on the Pacific island of Nauru, he was eventually granted asylum in New Zealand and is now a New Zealand citizen. The flow of refugees around the world complicates the processes of international law covering travel and migration. Many countries impose quotas on the number of asylum seekers. Some refugees try to take shortcuts to gain asylum, leading to accusations of 'queue jumping'.
