A woman sets the jack for the first game of the season at the Avon Club green in Stratford in the 1920s. Initially women had not been allowed to play at clubs, but from the early 20th century they began to set up their own clubs and competitions. The Avon Club had broken away from the Stratford Club in 1919 and by 1920 already had 92 members. At Avon women were welcome alongside the men. In 1945 women also established their own club, the Stratford Women's Bowling Club.
