Burt Munro bought his Indian Scout motorcycle new in 1920. He worked on the bike to increase its speed, using homemade parts and tools to develop the 'Munro Special'. Munro set New Zealand records on the 'Special' in 1940 and 1957, before setting world records at Bonneville, Utah, in the 1960s. In 1971, aged 72, he set a New Zealand record for the flying half-mile, 750cc class, on a 1936 618cc Velocette on Ōreti Beach, Southland.
