John Cottle was one of New Zealand’s pre-eminent showjumpers from the 1970s. He represented New Zealand in both the 1984 and 1988 Olympics and in a number of world cups. A six-time winner of the New Zealand Horse of the Year title, he was inducted into the Horse of the Year Hall of Fame in 2010. Pictured here on Rifleman, winning the Grand Prix at Rotterdam in 1974, Cottle was the first New Zealand rider to establish a base in the northern hemisphere. This example was subsequently followed by a number of prominent New Zealand riders, including Mark Todd and Caroline Powell. In 2013 Cottle continued to coach showjumpers from his base in Clevedon.
