Butterworth's Old Curiosity Shop

Butterworth's Old Curiosity Shop

James Butterworth of New Plymouth was a major collector and trader of Māori artefacts from 1867 until his death in 1903. He was the proprietor of the 'Old Curiosity Shop', which was both an outlet for his collecting and a source of items for other collectors. Butterworth obtained many items from the Māori settlement of Parihaka. Parts of his collection ended up in museums, including Te Papa Tongarewa, Canterbury Museum and Puke Ariki.
