Henry Demarest Lloyd was a well-known Chicago journalist who came to New Zealand in 1899, attracted by its reputation for progressive reform. As a battler for social justice for many years, he hoped to use the example of New Zealand's liberal reforms to influence social and legislative change in the United States. His visit attracted no interest at the time, but there was pride when his two books on New Zealand were published.
