Collecting the pension

The Old Age Pension Act 1898 was a landmark piece of legislation that allowed most people over the age of 65, who had lived in New Zealand for 25 years or more and who were deemed to be of good character, a small pension to enable them to live independently and comfortably. In this 1899 photograph an elderly man who has received a certificate approving his pension application presents it at a post office in order to collect his payment.
