Ruins of the Cromwell Athenaeum

Ruins of the Cromwell Athenaeum

This photograph of the athenaeum (a lending library and reading room) in the South Island town of Cromwell, taken in 2003, shows it in ruins. However, the provincial government act that set it up in 1873 is still part of New Zealand law. It is one of a handful of provincial acts and ordinances that linger in the 2000s.
