Peacekeeping in Bougainville: playing volleyball

This volleyball game with Bougainville children (who look willing but not convinced) served a number of purposes. Such interactions helped reduce tensions in communities and let them get to know the New Zealand peacekeepers. Attention to children emphasised peacekeepers' commitment to supporting the whole community. For the New Zealanders, it was also a welcome break from searching for weapons and landmines, or preventing confrontations.
