In 1975 three New Zealand agriculturalists – (from left) Peter Allan, Bruce Koller and Ian Blair – went to Peru as part of a New Zealand government aid programme. They helped cooperatives in the Sierra region with pasture improvement and sheep breeding programmes. One of their most effective initiatives was the use of portable sheep pens for grading stock. Peruvian pens were made of mud-block and each sheep was physically lifted into the appropriate pen for grading. The portable pens saved time and energy.
