New Zealand, Australian and United States aircraft take part in a joint ANZUS training exercise in Perth, Australia, in 1982. During the Cold War years (1945–91), New Zealand developed military alliances and relationships with a number of countries. New Zealand, Australia and the US worked together under the ANZUS defence treaty, signed in 1951. However, the alliance effectively came to an end from 1984–85 over New Zealand's opposition to visits by nuclear-armed or -powered ships.
