Checking the electoral roll was a mammoth task which required over 80 people in 1978. Shown here (from left) are Sue Howard, Jean Sewell and Barbara Ross at work. The Ministry of Justice was responsible for the roll. Despite the number of people involved, the system was flawed. A 1979 inquiry revealed that the roll included many duplicate entries and deceased people, while many people who had sent in registration forms were not listed. The Post Office was subsequently made responsible for the electoral roll.
