Governor-General Anand Satyanand signs the writ for the 2008 general election, watched by Chief Electoral Officer Robert Peden. The governor-general’s role in the electoral process is constitutionally significant. He or she signs the proclamation of the dissolution of Parliament, announces the date on which the new Parliament will meet, and signs the writ calling for a general election. The writ sets out the closing date for nomination of candidates, polling day, and the date on which results must be finalised. These actions are based on a combination of electoral law and advice from the prime minister.
