Edmund Hillary's status as an iconic New Zealander was reflected in the fact that he was given pride of place on the country's $5 banknote from 1992. The Reserve Bank also recognised his status with this wall at the entrance to their museum. Hillary achieved fame by becoming the first person (along with his climbing companion, Tenzing Norgay) to climb the world's highest peak, Mt Everest, in May 1953. He was the first living New Zealander to appear on a banknote.
