Henry Demarest Lloyd was a Chicago journalist who came to New Zealand in 1899 to examine at close hand the progressive reforms enacted by the Liberal government. He wrote two books following the visit, A country without strikes and Newest England. Lloyd was enthusiastic about what he had discovered and particularly praised the system of conciliation and arbitration as a way of dealing with industrial conflict. His writings helped to establish New Zealand's reputation overseas as the social laboratory of the world, and in turn awoke in New Zealanders themselves a stronger sense of pride in their social and political system.
