New Zealanders served in Britain's Royal Navy, where many were involved in anti-submarine activity protecting the movement of supplies across the Atlantic. During 1942 and 1943 they served on cruisers which escorted convoys in the North Atlantic taking supplies to the Russian port of Murmansk. Conditions were extremely icy and cold, as shown in this photo from the Auckland Weekly Newsof 6 May 1942.
