After the Gallipoli evacuation in January 1916 some New Zealanders stayed in the Middle East taking part in mounted operations against the Ottoman Empire in Sinai–Palestine and Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq). A few also became members of the Imperial Camel Corps. They are shown here resting during a march in Palestine. There is a memorial to the Camel Corps on the Embankment in London.
