Speaker Margaret Wilson (centre, in black suit) poses on the steps of Parliament with a group that includes parliamentary interns, in 2008. Wilson was Parliament's first woman speaker of the house (2005–8) and the first woman president of the New Zealand Labour Party (1984–87). The speaker is, in effect, the chair of the House of Representatives. The parliamentary internship programme has been run by Victoria University of Wellington's Political Science and International Relations Programme since 2000. Interns spend one day a week working in the office of a member of Parliament.
