'Opening the Books', 1984

The Labour government that took office in 1984 claimed that the previous National government, headed by Robert Muldoon, had left the economy in a weakened state, requiring urgent and severe action. In a publicity exercise titled 'Opening the Books', the new government made its case. This August 1984 photo shows Prime Minister David Lange (standing) with Finance Minister Roger Douglas (seated left) and Associate Finance Minister Richard Prebble.
