Kōrero: Judicial system

In order to guarantee judicial independence, the state must provide resources and administrative support services so that the courts can function autonomously. Administrative work includes painstaking jobs such as selection of people for jury service each week. Here, Miriama Kupe shows off the jury barrel used to select Wellington High Court juries in 1991. Each week a court clerk hand-picked 300 marbles which were put in numerical order and matched against the corresponding name in the jury roll. Then a list of the people selected was entered on computer.
