Paul Reeves: arriving at Government House

In addition to the conventional swearing-in, Sir Paul Reeves’s first day as governor-general in 1985 included a nohoanga kāinga, a distinctively Māori welcome to Government House. Reeves later recalled that as he walked up the driveway in the rain, the former activists in his support group joked that it was the easiest protest they’d ever been on.
