Auckland power-supply failure inquiry

Auckland power-supply failure inquiry

In January and February 1998 central Auckland was without power because of the successive failure of four power cables. Many businesses and inner-city apartment dwellers had to relocate temporarily, and it was five weeks before power was restored. The event attracted international media attention and much adverse comment. As a result, Minister of Energy Max Bradford appointed a commission of inquiry to investigate and report on the power outage. Here two of the three members of the commission, Hugh Rennie (left) and Keith Turner, inspect the site where one of the cables ruptured.
