Kōrero: State services and the Public Service Commission

Thomas Sherrard, clerk of the Executive Council, follows Keith Holyoake, prime minister-elect, out of Parliament. They are on their way to Government House, where Holyoake’s appointment as prime minister will be confirmed. The position of clerk of the Executive Council was established in 1841. The council has never been a powerful body – first the governor, then cabinet and the prime minister have controlled its activity.
