In the early 2000s the government supported the growth of the community-housing sector. Its Housing Innovation Fund gave grants for providers such as the Wellington Housing Trust to build rental housing. In 2009 they built six units in suburban Newtown using a $1.4-million loan and a $280,000 grant from the fund. Among those housed in the new complex was Somalian Ali Isse, his wife Marian, and their five children. Previously they had lived in a cold and damp two-bedroom council house, where all five children had developed asthma. Here Isse poses in front of his new home with trust director Alison Cadman.
