State houses: Upper Greys Avenue flats

As well as suburban housing, the government built inner-city rental flats for single people, childless couples and those who preferred city life. These are the Upper Greys Avenue Flats in Auckland, designed by government architect Gordon Wilson and completed in 1958. This photograph was taken in 1964 and juxtaposes the gleaming new flats with one of the Victorian-era dwellings they replaced.
