Alan MacDiarmid (left) poses with his fellow Nobel Prize winners Hideki Shirakawa from Japan (centre) and Alan Heeger from the United States, in Wellington in 2003. The three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000 for their discovery that plastics can, after certain modifications, be made electrically conductive. The work later yielded important practical applications, such as anti-static substances for photographic film and displays in mobile telephones.
