Young Alan on a bicycle

Alan MacDiarmid poses for the camera on his bicycle, probably in Lower Hutt around 1939. As a high school student he worked as a paper-boy to earn pocket money, delivering the Evening Post after school. MacDiarmid later described his childhood as very happy and supportive.
